Serenity Family Dentistry – Sedation
At Serenity Family Dentistry in Charlotte, your comfort is our priority. When you need dental work that could cause pain, we will make that your visit is as painless as possible. We will guide you through everything you can expect during your procedure.
When it comes to sedation, we will work with you to be as comfortable as you can be. We offer both oral sedation and local anesthesia.
Only trained and certified dentists can offer oral sedation to relax patients. Oral sedation is often recommended for patients who are anxious and may be afraid of the dental procedure. These fears amplify if a patient has experienced dental trauma earlier in their life.
A relaxed patient also helps the dentist to accomplish her work quicker as the patient is less fidgety.
Many patients prefer oral sedation over local anesthesia because it is known to have amnesia effects leaving the patient unaware of the dental procedure. It is also important to understand that the effects can linger after your office visit is completed. Arrange to have someone drive you to the office and back home.
Unlike oral sedation, local anesthesia does not relax the patient. Administered with a needle, the anesthesia targets a specific location in your mouth. In that area, the nerves are blocked from sensing the pain giving you numbness. Usually, your dentist will give you a topical anesthetic to ease any pain from the needle.
With a local anesthesia, the numbness wears off pretty quickly after your dental visit.
Ask your dentist about any aftercare that you may need.
