Serenity Family Dentistry – Periodontics
Periodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that looks at gum disease. Periodontists are trained and certified in helping patients to prevent, diagnose and cure periodontal disease. Gingivitis and periodontitis fall under this umbrella. With prevention and treatment, Dr. Attaway is always trained and certified with implant treatments.
At Serenity Family Dentistry in Charlotte, we specialize in providing periodontics care for you and your family. Each examination is different, and each therapy can differ. We will sit down with you to go over your diagnoses and set up aftercare therapy methods.
Gingivitis is better known as gum disease. Periodontitis is more aggressive and damages bone tissue. Both are caused by plaque buildup. Through preventive dental care, periodontitis and gingivitis can be addressed early to reduce more severe procedures. Other factors that can increase the chances of periodontitis or gingivitis include:
- Heredity
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Hormone changes
- Dry mouth
Should you be checked for periodontitis or gingivitis? If you notice swollen or bleeding gums, please call us to get checked. Other symptoms can include pains when chewing, continued bad breath and sensitive teeth. Putting off a checkup could result in advanced periodontitis or gingivitis and can result in tooth loss.
Periodontics Treatments
- Scaling
- Root planning
- Debridement therapy
- Tooth extraction
Dental scaling is a process where your periodontist scrapes plaque from above and under the gum lines. Root planning focuses on the tooth itself. Here, the dentist works on tartar buildup on the tooth and removes the bacteria causing the disease. Together, scaling and root planing treatments are part of the practice called debridement. Debridement therapy seeks to control bacterial infections, and scraping areas of buildup helps to control future bacterial growth.
When gum disease advances to where teeth become loose, your dentist may recommend extracting those teeth. As the gum disease grows, tissues weaken around the roots in the gums.
