Onlays and Inlays
When teeth are damaged or missing, your dentist may recommend a crown or to fill a cavity. But what happens when the tooth damage is too big to fill and too small to cap with a crown? When this happens, your dentist may recommend a dental inlay or an onlay. The procedures are close in nature, and we will determine which to use depending on the scope of the damage.
When damage does not require a full crown and is limited to the chewing surface of a tooth between the cusps, an inlay can be used. In cases when the damage includes a cusp or point of the tooth, an onlay is used. Both procedures help restore teeth and can reduce more serious procedures later.
What Can I Expect During My Office Visit
In your first onlay visit, your dentist and hygienist will go over the procedures. In this visit, they will prepare your tooth by cleaning and removing any decayed material. Like crowns, they will create a mold of the tooth to be repaired. Typically, you may need to wait a couple of weeks while the onlay is being made. Your dentist will install a temporary filling until your permanent onlay is ready. In your second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary filling and insert the onlay.
For inlays, your first visit will also include prepping the tooth. The dentist will then fill the tooth area with a hardening resin.
